Purchasing a used motorcycle can be an excellent way to get a quality bike at a lower cost compared to a new one. However, before signing on the dotted line, you’ll want to do your research to avoid getting stuck with a lemon. Not all used motorcycles are good deals. Some may have hidden issues, which can make your purchase an expensive mistake. The best way to avoid this is to do a comprehensive inspection before buying. Here are some tips to help you get started.
What to Look For
Walking around the used motorcycle will let you get a good look and evaluate its overall condition. You’ll want to check the bike for wear and tear, rust, and any other visible signs of damage. Scratches or dents on the motorcycle’s frame could indicate previous accidents that may have caused damage. Make sure that the tires are free from dry rot and have ample tread left. Uneven tire wear can suggest alignment problems or suspension issues.
Check the Engine and Transmission
Next, it’s time to look under the hood. Start the motorcycle and listen for any unusual noises, such as knocking or rattling. Keep an eye out for oil leaks around the engine. Watch out for red flags, such as engine smoke that’s too heavy or oddly colored. If it's deep black or blue, consider it a deal-breaker.

Pay attention to how the motorcycle handles, brakes, and accelerates. You’ll also want to ensure that the bike fits you well. Is it easy to reach the controls and footpegs, or do you have to stretch?
